Dessia evaluates its artificial intelligence at Saft to refine the design of customized batteries
Dessia and Saft have partnered to automate 3D battery design with AI, cutting iteration time and boosting efficiency in tender processes.
As part of its mission to transform industrial engineering through artificial intelligence, French start-up Dessia has announced a strategic partnership with Saft, a specialist in industrial batteries, and a subsidiary of TotalEnergies since 2018. The collaboration's initial goal is to automate the 3D generation of battery designs, improving responsiveness and efficiency in responding to calls for tenders, particularly in the rail sector. By leveraging its generative engineering algorithms, Dessia helps accelerate processes that were previously manual and time-consuming.
A concrete use case addressing a time-consuming challenge
The industrial sector responds to calls for tenders through a demanding process, generally structured in three main phases:
- A high-level design phase, defining the electrical architecture and basic sizing;
- A detailed CAD modeling phase, integrating all technical requirements from the specifications;
- An iteration phase – often lengthy and resource-intensive – aimed at aligning the proposed solution with customer expectations.
It is precisely this last phase – critical in terms of time and resources – that Saft has chosen to optimize using Dessia’s technology. The project, validated at the end of 2024, led to the development of an AI-powered tool capable of automatically generating and optimizing 3D battery concepts. This includes cell, module, and rack placement within constrained volumes, while meeting all electrical and energy performance requirements.
A promising evaluation phase
Since April 2025, the solution has been used for several studies through Dessia’s software platform. Initial feedback from Saft’s engineering teams highlights a significant reduction in modeling time and improved efficiency during technical iterations.
“This project allows us to rapidly explore innovative ideas, while ensuring an effective response to the most demanding needs. Dessia’s approach, which focuses on the intelligent automation of engineering tasks, opens up tangible opportunities for industrial-scale deployment in the medium term,” says Denis Popielski, Engineering Director – Industry Mobility & Infrastructure Division, Saft.
This collaboration marks a concrete step forward in integrating artificial intelligence into the engineering workflow. By automating a critical phase of the design process, the project paves the way for faster, more agile, and more efficient engineering.
In the long run, this initiative could lay the foundation for a paradigm shift in how industrial companies design and develop bespoke solutions to meet increasingly complex customer requirements.
